Salt Pans and Mozia

We had a lovely day to be on the waterfront, learning about the traditional and time-intensive ways of harvesting sea salt.  We climbed the one-person-wide winding stairs to get an upclose view of the windmill (sans sails) used to grind the salt into finer grains.  Then we boarded the boat to head to Mozia.

Our local guide Pina, posing with the 450 B.C. statue called "The Charioteer" which was found on Mozia.  It's incredible how stone can be shaped to look like flowing fabric.

We took a quick boat ride to Mozia, a small island that thousands of years ago was the site of a thriving community of Phoenicians, until a war resulted in the complete destruction of everything on the island.  With our local guide Pina, we walked among the scrub and pines of the island, viewing remnants of a mosaiced floor ... and also the flailing hands of some unfortunate members of our tour group who were irresistible to mosquitos.  Then we toured an archaeological museum full of rare and unusual-looking artifacts, some of which reminded us of Egyptian figures.
